Excellent post! I couldn't agree with you more. To substitute dynamic equivalent language for "people" would be to do the intended comparison of the verse a great injustice.

I must say I am a little surprised this post did not elicit more discussion. Calling an ant a "person" pushes the limits of functional equivalence. But I guess we are comfortable with this degree of imprecision in poetry. Noted, and thanks. --Bill
