We are interested in sparking some conversations on the recently-released Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary: Old Testament, which John Walton has been blogging about every Friday for the past 10 months or so.
The problem is that it can get pretty pricey to send out $250 sets! So we came up with this idea.
We will send you a volume of your choice to review (you pick the volume):
Vol. 1 - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
Vol. 2 - Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel
Vol. 3 - 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther
Vol. 4 - Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel
Vol. 5 - The Minor Prophets, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs
Your only obligation is to review this volume on your blog within the timeframe of October 26 – November 9.
Once your review is up, let us know, and we’ll send you one more volume. We would like it if you review this one as well, but you’re under no obligation.
Here’s how you can enter: simply submit a comment below with the name of either (1) an Egyptian Pharoah (or Pharaoh) or (2) an Ancient Near Eastern text. The first 30 unique answers will get one!
Note: we’ll email you to arrange shipment and volume details.

I'd like to review Volume 1

Shishaq was an Egyptian Pharoah (at least, that is his name in the Bible, he is usually known as Shoshenq I).

Hammurabi's Code. Can I do Volume 5?
Posted by: Don Chesworth | Friday, October 09, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Tutankhamun:
King Tut (King Tut)
Now when he was a young man,
He never thought he'd see
People stand in line to see the boy king.
(King Tut) How'd you get so funky?
(funky Tut) Did you do the monkey?
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut).
(king Tut) Now, if I'd known
they'd line up just to see him,
I'd trade in all my money
And bought me a museum. (king Tut)
Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He's my favorite honkey!
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut)
Dancin' by the Nile, (Disco Tut)
The ladies love his style, (boss Tut)
Rockin' for a mile (rockin' Tut)
He ate a crocodile.
He gave his life for tourism.
Golden idol!
He's an Egyptian
They're sellin' you.
Now, when I die,
now don't think I'm a nut,
don't want no fancy funeral,
Just one like ole king Tut. (king Tut)
He coulda won a Grammy,
Buried in his Jammies,
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia,
He was born in Arizona, got a condo made of stone-a,
King Tut! (lyrics by Steve Martin)
I hope this is "unique" enough. If not, welllll excuuusssse meeee!!!
Thanks and if chosen I would like to review volume 3.

My favorite of the Pharoah's is easily Amenhotep III, later named Akhenaton. The whole dilemma over his religion is still a fascination.

What about the first comment chastising you guys for misspelling "Pharaoh"? I'm sure the ancient librarians of Nuzi are rolling in their graves. You better be glad Enkidu isn't reading this or he would go ape on you.
Or was that a trick question? If it is, then I will answer:
There were no Egyptian Pharoahs, only Egyptian Pharaohs such as Thutmoses, Mernepthah and the always-fun-to-say Shishak! ... Read More
Now send me my Vol.1 to review in the Discipleship Dojo! (gsdisciple.blogspot.com)

"The Dialogue of Pessimism": A Mesopotamian text dating to 1200 BC. It is somewhat comparable to Ecclesiastes, but concludes with suicide as opposed to a determination to live in covenantal faithfulness to God with an eschatological hope in God to "bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, including good and evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). 'The Dialogue of Pessimism,' I suppose, would be the secular counterpart to the book of Ecclesiastes.

Enuma of different ANE texts come to mind, so hopefully Elish one might be clever enough for you. I just got out of a class about Babylonian Legends of Creation, but at the moment it's all one big Deluge causing my brains to turn to Gilgamish. Maybe if I get the Seven Evil Spirits out, you'll send me one?
