John Walton, professor and contributor to Four Views of the Historical Adam, believes we are in a time period that’s prompting us to look again at Genesis 1 and 2 and reconsider our theology of human origins.
What’s prompting us is The Human Genome Project, which Walton calls a “game changer.” While he doesn’t want to merely take what science says and reconfigure the Bible, he says “If what science and what scientists are discovering can prompt me to ask new questions in places where I haven’t asked those questions before, I want to do that,” which can point us in a new direction.
For Walton that new direction is an archetypical view of Adam, which preserves Adam’s historicity as a real person and the author’s use of Adam in the story.
Listen to Walton and consider anew what Genesis is trying to say that’s true of all humanity.
